English Department Description

At Aberdeen St. Peter’s Catholic Primary School, students are encouraged to:

- acquire subject knowledge and skills, which are expressed in the form of learning targets under the Interpersonal, Knowledge and Experience Strands, as well as learning objectives;

- develop generic skills; and

- strengthen positive values and attitudes.

Every year, the English Department has different plans in both curriculum and activities to enhance students’ interest in learning English.

Reading Across Curriculum (RaC) has been promoted by the Education Bureau to help students develop reading strategies as well as to make meaningful connections between different learning experiences. Our school thus launched RaC Projects in Primary 4, 5 and 6 English Curriculum. Our teachers selected interesting books of various topics for the students. After in-class discussions and reading activities, students were asked to apply the knowledge to do a scientific experiment or write their own books on the topic. In the projects, students not only acquire knowledge and skills on the language, but also apply the knowledge based on the content of the books.

ASPCPS also work in cooperation with other educational partners. This year, we are honoured to have participated in two projects: Quality Education Fund Thematic Networks – Schools (QTN-S) EDB in P.1 and Integrating Social and Emotional Learning into the English Curriculum in P.4: Fostering Positive Values, Attitudes and Motivation in English Learning in Primary School by The Chinese University of Hong Kong. A series of lesson observations and co-planning meetings were carried out for both teachers and students to explore more teaching and learning related opportunities. Both projects allowed students to learn extensively through different e-learning tools like Padlet and Wordwall.

Our school’s English Drama Team was a great success this year. The team made the school very proud as their diligence paid off with their achievement in the Drama Festival 2022/2023. Two performers won the Award for Outstanding Performer . The school also won Award of Outstanding Cooperation and Award for Outstanding Audio-visual Effects.

Every year, ASPCPS holds English Fun Day to encourage students to communicate in English in a fun way. This year, the topic was ‘God Grants Me Talents’. Four secondary schools, St. Peter's Secondary School, S. W. C. S. Chan Pak Sha School, Yu Chun Keung Memorial College No.2 and St. Joan of Arc Secondary School offered their help generously with four extra booths, which added to a total number of twelve booths with different topics set up to engage students in various activities. Students had a fantastic time at the booths talking and playing games in English. They were thrilled to have won the prizes and had a memorable experience that day.
